Hail Storm - 8/17/08

Yesterday mom and I were in Albuquerque printing her boarding passes for her flight. On our way home I decided to take the scenic route through Isleta pueblo and then down Rt 47 in Los Lunas though Tome and into Belen that way. We made it to the Tome Art Gallery and it started to hail... Hard! I turned around and tried to get away from it, the hail was about an inch in diameter!!!
We ended up going home through Los Lunas on Rt 314. When we got into Belen there was hail piled on the roads/grass/roofs as if it were snow! There was a lot of water puddled up and several side streets had completely flooded. We stopped at the park near downtown Belen because all the trees there had been stripped of their leaves by the force of all the hail. The ground was littered with small branches mixed with large quarter-sized hail.
We got to where I needed to turn to get to my street and I couldn't because the runoff from the storm was washing over the end of the street so fast that had I tried my car would have been washed into the drainage ditch. We had to drive several streets up the road to higher ground before I could get into my neighborhood.
Here are some of the videos I took with my cell phone, my mom's digital camera has some more videos on it and once I get them I'll be adding them to this playlist on YouTube: Hail Storm Playlist.

Backwards Trike on I-91

Alison called me the other day to ask me if I had ever heard of a car called the T-Rex.  I actually hadn't heard of it before, so I checked online and found that I had seen it before, just not called that.  She took a picture of it as it zoomed by her on the highway, but I've included some cool video of this in action:

Another wind scorpion in my house

Found another wind scorpion in my house last night!  He was about as big as we've seen them around here.  I've read that they can grow up to 5" across, but we've never found one over 1.5".  They have beady little eyes, and ginormous shredding mouth-parts that most certainly would be painful if it bit you.  They are non-venomous though.

Thunderstorm 6-29-2008

While driving back from a canceled softball game I saw a full double rainbow!

I also got some pictures of it (click each one for the full-size image):

It's harder to see the outer rainbow in the second picture, and it was much fainter than the inner one which was extremely bright.

Martian Child

Last Thursday night Erin and I went to see a screening of the movie Martian Child with Megan and Will. I had seen the preview of it and knew a little bit about the story, but had no expectations going into the theater. The movie stars John and Joan Cusack, oddly enough playing brother and sister. The main character adopts a young boy who thinks he's from Mars and has developed some extremely unique behaviors because of this. The main plot of the movie revolves around John's character dealing with the death of his wife and the eccentricities of his new responsibility. Amanda Peet co-stars along with several other recognizable people.

I found this movie to be very funny and touching, the ending was perfect and the acting in this movie is top-notch. I'm a big John Cusack fan and we will be adding this movie to our collection as soon as it is available.

I highly recommend this film; it opens in theaters November 9th.

The Jonah Veil

Today The Jonah Veil were supposed to play a concert in Albuquerque and I was so excited about being able to see my brother and the band he's in play a concert. But because of a booking snafu (i.e. the concert was never really booked) they didn't get to play. The ended up hanging out at our house and having a cookout with Erin and I.

I'm really bummed that I didn't get to see them play, but it was a lot of fun hanging out and listening to them tell some of the stories about their cross-country trip so far. It's 10:30 and they just left a few minutes ago to head to their next gig in Abilene, Texas. Hopefully that concert will still be happening by the time they get there.

I've got a handful of pictures up of them at our house here: <link>

EDIT: more pictures can be found here: <link>

Caffeinated to the max!!!!

So Chris has outdone himself over at his blog. He's got three videos clips in one post!!! Each one hosted on one of the 3 major video hosting websites: YouTube, Google Video, and Revver. I don't know much about Revver, but the way it works over there is that if you've got a popular video you can make a bit of money as the website will pay you based on video views. You have to check it out as it is extremely funny. Make sure you click on each one and then hit pause right away. Wait for each one to finish downloading. Then click play on the top, the middle, and the bottom, in that order as quickly as you can so they all play at the same time.
I'm not sure but when I did it the Google video just stopped while the YouTube and Revver videos continued to play so I don't think I got the full effect, but I watched each video and even on their own they were hilarious.

White and Nerdy - Great Weird Al Parody

This is one of the funniest videos I've seen in a long time. I linked to someone else that has the video since I've got so many on the front page now; hopefully it will make the page load a little faster as the videos move off the front page.
