Martian Child
Last Thursday night Erin and I went to see a screening of the movie Martian Child with Megan and Will. I had seen the preview of it and knew a little bit about the story, but had no expectations going into the theater. The movie stars John and Joan Cusack, oddly enough playing brother and sister. The main character adopts a young boy who thinks he's from Mars and has developed some extremely unique behaviors because of this. The main plot of the movie revolves around John's character dealing with the death of his wife and the eccentricities of his new responsibility. Amanda Peet co-stars along with several other recognizable people.
I found this movie to be very funny and touching, the ending was perfect and the acting in this movie is top-notch. I'm a big John Cusack fan and we will be adding this movie to our collection as soon as it is available.
I highly recommend this film; it opens in theaters November 9th.

You Can't Handle the Mountains!!!
This has to be one of the best comments I have ever seen online:flickr.
Son, we live in a world that has computers, and those computers have to be powered by outlets with electricy. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Mr. Internet Blogger? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for mountains, and you curse the coal diggers. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That dug up mountains , while tragic, lets you whine on the net. And coal refining's existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, lets you whine on the net. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me in that mountain, you need me in that mountain. We use words like OMG, HAI and HAXXORZ. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent blogging something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who blogs and whines under the blanket of the very power that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a hamster wheel, and start powering your own PC. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Welcome Zack
Erin and I got a puppy this weekend!!! His name is Zack and he is an 11-week old miniature schnauzer. He is really cool and loads of fun, not to mention tiring. Loves to chew on everything and is full of energy. He's still working on making it outside before having an accident, but we're very close already to having him housebroken.
I've posted the first pictures here on my website, check them out when you have a chance.

Top 11 Geek Gifts ... sort of
While this list is funny, there are more practical and funny stuff that I've seen on other "top xxx" lists for geeks. I really like #11
11. One year of "no computer questions" from everyone in your family. But I actually like getting questions from family/friends. I just wish that I didn't live so far away so I could actually work on the computer in-person instead of trying to help via phone/email. Oh well...

Caffeinated to the max!!!!
So Chris has outdone himself over at his blog. He's got three videos clips in one post!!! Each one hosted on one of the 3 major video hosting websites: YouTube, Google Video, and Revver. I don't know much about Revver, but the way it works over there is that if you've got a popular video you can make a bit of money as the website will pay you based on video views. You have to check it out as it is extremely funny. Make sure you click on each one and then hit pause right away. Wait for each one to finish downloading. Then click play on the top, the middle, and the bottom, in that order as quickly as you can so they all play at the same time.
I'm not sure but when I did it the Google video just stopped while the YouTube and Revver videos continued to play so I don't think I got the full effect, but I watched each video and even on their own they were hilarious.

NINTENDO WII!!!!!
I sat in a hard plastic chair for 6 hours on Saturday night in the layaway department of my local Walmart to have the privelage of purchasing one of the first Nintendo Wii's for sale at 12:01am Sunday, November 19. I was #9 in line and let me just say that before you ask... "YES, IT WAS WORTH IT!!!" This thing is the most amazing game experience I've had in a long time. It's got some of the coolest features you could ever ask for:
- Standard wireless controllers that are as comfortable as holding your TV remote, except they have gyros in them so you not only can swing them in the air to make on-screen moves, you can twist them like a key or a screwdriver and it senses that as well!
- Built-in WiFi; it took me a little bit of tweaking to get my wireless router setup correctly, but once it was the Wii found it and connected no problem; then it proceeded to download several updates and I was off and running.
- It came with a game from Nintendo... INCLUDED IN THE CONSOLE PRICE
- You can send messages from one Wii to a friend's Wii once you each register your friend's console's unique number
- YOU CAN DOWNLOAD PREVIOUS NINTENDO/SEGA GAMES ONLINE (prices range from $5 - $10, with 12 games available on launch day)
- All Gamecube accessories/games work in the Wii; i.e. controllers, memory cards, and game CDs
- My wife played this bundled game (Wii Sports) with me as soon as we got it setup (12:30am) for 2 hours!!!!! That's unheard of, she's not a gamer much, but she said as long as we buy/download the original Mario Bros. she'll be happy.
Read more about the experience after the jump...
So here's how it worked at the store I bought them:
- Walmart got 20 units.
- They set out 20 chairs numbered 1 to 20.
- You sit in the next highest number chair and you get to buy them in that order.
- New Mexico has no law allowing stores to limit purchases to one per person so if their gone before you get to buy one, tough luck.
- I was #9, and only 3 people in front of me were buying 2 so I was good.
- The people in chairs 17, 18, 19, and 20 got nada.
- I got there around 5:30 pm.
- They handed out numbered tickets at 10pm, basically serving as a guarantee that you could leave and come back at midnight and keep your spot in line.
- I left and Erin came back with me and we wandered around Walmart for an hour and then they took 2 people at a time and they got to buy their Wii's and any accessories/games they wanted from what Walmart had at the time.
- I got an extra Wii-mote, extra nunchuk, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and a classic controller, but I might return that after I found out that gamecube controllers will work with the downloaded classic games.
- Got home around 12:30am and played until 3am!!!!
YEAH WII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I Can Fix Your Computer
This blogger vents his frustration about being a computer engineer who keeps getting asked to fix peoples computers. He's frustrated because everyone assumes that because he went to school for some aspect of computers he knows how to fix them. He actually went to school to learn how to program them. I sympathize with him in all of what he's going through; I get asked all the time why a computer might be doing something wrong, or not working at all, but that's what I do so it doesn't bother me as much. What does bother me is when someone asks me the same question for the same problem repeatedly after I've explained it very clearly already. If I show someone something I have them do it themselves while I watch so that they get the feel for it and the experience, what I won't do is do it for you.

PC De-Crapifier... Finally
Here's a truly useful program, it gives you a list of commonly pre-installed programs and then will remove them for you. Man this will save tons of users a lot of time. Mainly geared towards the stuff that Dell puts on their computers, but should work on any new computer if the software on the list is on the computer.
