Best Buy to sell boxed version of Linux
Best Buy stores are set to start selling a boxed version of Canonical's μBuntu Linux for $20. This is pretty cool as many people are not aware that it's free to download online... the main benefit of this is the visibility that the OS will receive by being out there for customers to see who wouldn't know it existed otherwise. Having this in a retail chain, especially one as large as Best Buy, will show people that there are serious alternatives to Microsoft's Windows or Mac OS. In addition to getting an installation CD, users will get 60 days of free phone support for installation and setup.

Hot, hot, hot
So the past week or so has been insanely hot. Yesterday it got up to 99.7°F, and Monday topped out at just over 101°F!!! It was all I could do to keep from melting... last night I had to move my two servers into the kitchen to try and keep them from overheating; I think that they were contributing to the heat in the living room... I did have 3 computers in there.
Don't believe me? Check this out:
Hopefully things will start to cool off, but I'm not holding my breath.

No Internet, No Problem...
Here is a pretty good list of things you can do with your computer when you don't have a connection to the internet. 5 things (plus a bonus item) that are good to do anyways, but when you can't surf the "tubes" these are great ways to use up the time and at least get something done. <link>

Top 11 Geek Gifts ... sort of
While this list is funny, there are more practical and funny stuff that I've seen on other "top xxx" lists for geeks. I really like #11
11. One year of "no computer questions" from everyone in your family. But I actually like getting questions from family/friends. I just wish that I didn't live so far away so I could actually work on the computer in-person instead of trying to help via phone/email. Oh well...

Caffeinated to the max!!!!
So Chris has outdone himself over at his blog. He's got three videos clips in one post!!! Each one hosted on one of the 3 major video hosting websites: YouTube, Google Video, and Revver. I don't know much about Revver, but the way it works over there is that if you've got a popular video you can make a bit of money as the website will pay you based on video views. You have to check it out as it is extremely funny. Make sure you click on each one and then hit pause right away. Wait for each one to finish downloading. Then click play on the top, the middle, and the bottom, in that order as quickly as you can so they all play at the same time.
I'm not sure but when I did it the Google video just stopped while the YouTube and Revver videos continued to play so I don't think I got the full effect, but I watched each video and even on their own they were hilarious.

Can't get any respect
More often than not, the IT guy at your company has felt under-appreciated. This is becoming an alarming trend in large companies trying to take shortcuts by hiring under-qualified or undedicated people and paying them ridiculously low wages. I can say from experience that it definitely is becoming a problem; the only time you hear anything from people is when things don't work. I hardly ever hear anyone say thanks for keeping things working so well.
This article talks about this very subject and rather than reiterate what he says, here's the article:
TWEAKNEWS
The problem is that the PC tech companies put little to no store in their techs, and then pay ridiculous wages and still expect premium service.

NINTENDO WII!!!!!
I sat in a hard plastic chair for 6 hours on Saturday night in the layaway department of my local Walmart to have the privelage of purchasing one of the first Nintendo Wii's for sale at 12:01am Sunday, November 19. I was #9 in line and let me just say that before you ask... "YES, IT WAS WORTH IT!!!" This thing is the most amazing game experience I've had in a long time. It's got some of the coolest features you could ever ask for:
- Standard wireless controllers that are as comfortable as holding your TV remote, except they have gyros in them so you not only can swing them in the air to make on-screen moves, you can twist them like a key or a screwdriver and it senses that as well!
- Built-in WiFi; it took me a little bit of tweaking to get my wireless router setup correctly, but once it was the Wii found it and connected no problem; then it proceeded to download several updates and I was off and running.
- It came with a game from Nintendo... INCLUDED IN THE CONSOLE PRICE
- You can send messages from one Wii to a friend's Wii once you each register your friend's console's unique number
- YOU CAN DOWNLOAD PREVIOUS NINTENDO/SEGA GAMES ONLINE (prices range from $5 - $10, with 12 games available on launch day)
- All Gamecube accessories/games work in the Wii; i.e. controllers, memory cards, and game CDs
- My wife played this bundled game (Wii Sports) with me as soon as we got it setup (12:30am) for 2 hours!!!!! That's unheard of, she's not a gamer much, but she said as long as we buy/download the original Mario Bros. she'll be happy.
Read more about the experience after the jump...
So here's how it worked at the store I bought them:
- Walmart got 20 units.
- They set out 20 chairs numbered 1 to 20.
- You sit in the next highest number chair and you get to buy them in that order.
- New Mexico has no law allowing stores to limit purchases to one per person so if their gone before you get to buy one, tough luck.
- I was #9, and only 3 people in front of me were buying 2 so I was good.
- The people in chairs 17, 18, 19, and 20 got nada.
- I got there around 5:30 pm.
- They handed out numbered tickets at 10pm, basically serving as a guarantee that you could leave and come back at midnight and keep your spot in line.
- I left and Erin came back with me and we wandered around Walmart for an hour and then they took 2 people at a time and they got to buy their Wii's and any accessories/games they wanted from what Walmart had at the time.
- I got an extra Wii-mote, extra nunchuk, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and a classic controller, but I might return that after I found out that gamecube controllers will work with the downloaded classic games.
- Got home around 12:30am and played until 3am!!!!
YEAH WII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I Can Fix Your Computer
This blogger vents his frustration about being a computer engineer who keeps getting asked to fix peoples computers. He's frustrated because everyone assumes that because he went to school for some aspect of computers he knows how to fix them. He actually went to school to learn how to program them. I sympathize with him in all of what he's going through; I get asked all the time why a computer might be doing something wrong, or not working at all, but that's what I do so it doesn't bother me as much. What does bother me is when someone asks me the same question for the same problem repeatedly after I've explained it very clearly already. If I show someone something I have them do it themselves while I watch so that they get the feel for it and the experience, what I won't do is do it for you.

TechTV Reunion
Just read over on Digg.com that Chris Pirillo mentioned a comment that Leo Laporte made about organizing a reunion of the gang from TechTV before it was demolished by the evil that is G4. I can remember watching some of the shows (The Screen Savers, Call for Help, etc.) and thinking that this was the "shiznit." Then it all stopped and all the guys/gals were flung to the corners of cyberspace. I've tried to keep tabs on what's going on with my favorite hosts/techies but it's been tough.

Windows might decide to stop working for you...
So there's this update for Windows, the Windows Genuine Advantage; it installs itself as an update and is supposed to validate if you have a legal copy of Windows and phones home to Microsoft to inform them. One problem with this is that it does this once a day or more even if the first time it runs it finds that you are indeed running a legit copy. Now reports are trickling in that come September it will be mandatory to have this on your machine and if you don't or it detects a pirated copy of Windows it will give you 30 days to fix the problem or your computer will cease to function.
I see this as a cause for a lot of people to "jump ship" and move to something else (read Linux).

How many hours a week do you work?
The next time you think about complaining about the long hours that you work each week and the small amount of compensation you feel you get think about this guy's story; and the many other programmers that work for ridiculous hours and get paid for a fraction of that time. Yeah things are improving, but this used to be par for the course and until recently no one was bold enough to stand up to it.

fragged you...!
Here's a guy who says what a lot of prople are afraid to: they like first-person shooter games. Who doesn't, well apparently there are plenty of people that don't, but so what?! As he says in the article:
Let us praise the joys of double-wielding a pair of Uzis with unlimited ammo; let us delight in the gorgeous fractal carnage of a rocket launcher as it slams into your target. Let us talk openly about how just totally awesome it is to grab a fully loaded railgun in Quake 4 and wade into a mass of gibbering Strogg aliens and kill and kill and kill again, until there are guts on, like, the ceiling.I mean come on, everyone needs a break from the humdrums of everyday life and kick back and blast a few mutant zombies once in a while.

Big time update
Many of my more recent posts have been kinda dry and short. I've got this grand idea that I'll put stuff on here every day, but that's probably a little unrealistic given my attention span sometimes. I've got a couple of projects in my head and that I'm working on and it's difficult to split my time up between them all. I'd like to spend more time re-working my website, as well as working on a model of the nuclear power plant that my dad is working on, and reading a new book, not to mention some minor improvements around the house (read installing a shelf in the kitchen). Erin and I have also gotten ourselves hooked on watching the first season of Lost; we've gotten through the 3rd DVD in the set.
I've been working every day and it's gets tedious at times, but I look at it as a stepping stone to bigger/better things down the road. I've spoken to my Store Team Leader at length and she's willing to work with me to help me get the necessary training/certifications that I need to continue on my career path. She knows that this isn't where I want to be; that I'd be much happier in a position where I got to use tech every day all the time, instead of once in a while here when someone has a question about a program. The computers don't break that often, not because they're well built/maintained (they don't have to be), but because the people using them don't know that much about computers so it's hard for them to muck 'em up. I'm hoping to get some certifications under my belt and then once Erin is done with her degree we can seriously think about where we want to go and I can start putting out feelers as to the possibility of moving up to a regional IT position within the company. I really don't like working in the store, well mainly I don't like working in a grocery store, but I'm in a much better position than I was when I was slicing deli meat and slinging chicken wings, but I'd like to get out of the retail world and into something a little more tech oriented; i.e. the regional help desk, or even a regional IT infrastructure guy.
Erin and I have been sitting down each weekend for the past 2 weeks and planning our meals for the upcoming week. It's been going really well and other than switching around the days, we've pretty much stuck to our menu. It's made the evenings much less stressful because we no longer come home from work/school and ask each other "what do you want to have for dinner?" We know and we just start making it. It's great, plus we have greatly diversified our palate by having things like fish, pork loin, and roast beef; no more just plain mac & cheese or some lame-ass chicken (we still have chicken, it's just more creative).
I still haven't figured out a good way to relax on the weekends. It seems like every chunk of time I get on the weekends ends up being used to do something. That's why I'm looking forward to the trips we have planned coming up. We'll be in Delaware the first weekend in May for Meriah's graduation, and then she's coming out here the end of May for a week. Plus we're hoping to either go to Alabama to see Erin's family this summer, or have them come out here (I still need to look again at my vacation time and see what I can afford to use to take time off - over a weekend will probably be best). August is when I'll be in Las Vegas for Dan's party for a weekend, then in September we'll be in Massachusetts for Dan and Niki's wedding. I just wish I could have a weekend where I didn't have to go anywhere unless I wanted to, and I could do whatever popped into my head. I know that's wishful thinking, but... um yeah.
Welll I've blabbed my head for a while and I can't think of anything else that's going on now that worth noting... OH, the other day the Dept of Agriculture came in to do their routine random audit for scan accuracy and we did awesome. The last time he came in to do this we had 11 discrepancies; this time we had 4 and if 3 of those things had had signs like they were supposed to we would have have only one thing wrong and that's a huge improvement. I was elated because it showed that I've been doing a pretty good job of making sure things are cool, and it gave me some confidence moving forward on my regularly scheduled audits throughout the store that I should not be finding that many errors as I go. Makes my job easier, and it makes the store look better. My goal now is for there to be 0 errors next time they come in to do this type of random 100-item audit. WOOHOO!!!
Ok, now I'm done.

The Latest Buzz
Word on the Internet is that Microsoft is going to be announcing this new product called Origami. Apparently it's a new kind of portable computer (aka Windows Mobile) that does all sorts of stuff from handwriting recognition to play MP3's to edit pictures to do email and play games. Here's a video that was posted on the site of the company doing PR for this new project <link>; YouTube was able to get a hold of it before the company, Digital Kitchen, took it down.
Check it out, it's kinda interesting; no word on what it will cost but you can bet it'll be something that a lot of people will want, and many can't afford. Kinda like the new XBox 360, I mean come on; $400 to play a game, and that's without any game!!!! Or think about the new Playstation 3, rumors are flying that it will be somewhere around $900!!! YIKES, count me out. I'll wait for the Nintendo Revolution to come out, word has it that that will only be around $200, WOOT!

Man, after reading this post I can sympathize with the author. I've read many a "tutorial" that left me less than confident in doing what it was giving instructions on. I've also read many that actually helped me immensely and were very easy to follow <see previous post>. I haven't written any formal tutorials, but I've worked on directions for many different tasks in the past and I hope that I wasn't an offender on any of his points.

Inside the mind of Computer Dave
I've been thinking a lot lately about where I want to go with my career and I've had some ideas that are actually really exciting to me.
One of them is the proposition of the creation of a new position at work (regionally, at least) for a technical trainer. The person in that position would be responsible for training people on how to use the different programs that their job required; eg. Microsoft Outlook for email, or Excel for purchasing/schedulling. They would also be responsible for creating documentation to accompany the use of certain websites; eg. requesting new products, sending electronic sign requests, etc.
The other idea I had was to pursue a position in technical support or IT with the company my dad works for. This idea came to me just recently (this morning) because I know that they are working on some plans for a nuclear power plant that they hope will be chosen when the US decides to build its next nuclear plant.

Website... again
This past weekend I took a step towards re-organizing the website. Now if you go to computerdave.net you will not see what you used to, it's now a little more organized as to what's available from computerdave.net and takes you directly to it. Each sub-section of the site is being worked on right now and will evolve over time, please direct comments here.
I know many of you might wonder what was wrong with it before and truly there wasn't anything "wrong" with the site; I just didn't like it. I'm not sure I like it that much the way it is now, but it's better and cleaner. Please bear with me as I work on this a little at a time. I'll probably have some time to work on it tomorrow as I don't have to be at work until 1pm because I'm working overnight at the store with my coordinator and another guy from the helpdesk to renumber the IP addresses in the store and install another switch to allow for the handful of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs); this will allow us to keep things like the registers, PCs/printers/servers, scales, and handheld computers separate from each other. It will also allow us to convert the entire store over to wireless networks in the coming months.
Now that I think of it, that means another overnight sometime in like June or something like that! UGH!

digg
Some of you may be wondering where I get some of the links I get. Well I frequent numerous news and information websites, but the one that by far is the best for finding new stuff is digg.com, this site is different than places like Slashdot.org or Fark.com because all the links posted to the website are shown. This site is known as a social bookmarking site because it lets registered (free) users post links to things and then see what others have posted and "digg" them which adds them to a personalized page of all stories "dugg" by a particular user. You can view stories I've 'dugg' by click here. This site is mainly tech related things, but more recently it's started to get away from being just technical/computer related and there are some really cool things on there. I also like to read Techdirt, but there's a lot of overlap between Digg.com and Techdirt; one difference is that Techdirt is a blog and each entry is someone's opinion/take on a particular article or submission. For just straight news stories, I often will peruse CNN.com, but I don't normally read that much there. Take a look when you get a chance.

Certifications with a grain of salt
Here's an interesting take on the value, or lack of, of getting any type of IT certification. What makes this page more interesting is the value of the comments posted by other people who have read the opinion of the author. This is something I've been thinking of recently and started to look more seriously at relative to cost and time commitment; I've got several years of experience now and I'm looking for a way to broaden my knowledgebase so that I feel more comfortable working on a wider variety of technical issues.

Depending on what browser you use to surf the internet, you might notice that if you reload my webpage and my blog that up next to the web address for my page you'll see a new icon/picture. It's called the favicon and I finally found out how to make that appear on my sites.

RSS for the masses...
Here's a great example of what the whole blog-o-sphere on the net is fostering: Mozilla Firefox has been using a particular icon to represent websites that have RSS feeds. Last week Microsoft announced that it would be using that very same icon in its next iteration of Internet Explorer and they've actually been collaborating with the developers over at Mozilla on this. This link provides users with some easy to use 'templates' to customize the icon for use on their own personal sites without detracting from what the icon represents.
Great job!

The World is a Little Bit Safer Now...
Today the world is a small bit safer thanks to one man. Shortly after receiving a new XBOX 360, this is what happened: link. The website where this started is smashmyxbox.com. Apparently it was a social prank to destroy it in front of all the other people who waited in line to pay the insane price of $400 for this new thing. They collected donations to pay for it. These guys are also the people responsible for smashmyipod.com.

Babbling Idiots Unite
So this image was sent to all the ISSC's in the Southwest region today, it made me laugh for about 15 minutes, I had to watch it several times. One of the funniest things I've seen in a long time.

Too Cool
I found a website today through Digg.com that had a graphic that you could put on your website to encourage more people to use alternative web browsers instead of Internet Explorer. I use Mozilla Firefox, and for email I use Mozilla Thunderbird. Nothing cooler than built-in pop-up blocking, image blocking by website, cookie management, tabbed browsing, and faster load times. Thunderbird has built-in spam blocking, and a much cleaner interface; it also doesn't get the viruses that Outlook Express gets.

Spacesheep
I was surfing the web while on my lunch break and I came across an interesting article. The most interesting thing from this article is this quote:
"People need to understand politically and socially that porn was not born yesterday, that it's fundamentally harmless, and that people have been looking at it forever."
Here is the article: This Old Porn Is New Again (Wired News - Safe For Work)

New Web Address
On Sunday I purchased a domain name for my website so no instead of having to type in a long string of numbers to reach my website, my friends and family can simply type in computerdave.net and never have to remember all the numbers. This will help immensely with moving around and changing Internet service providers. If anyone cares for more detail about why this is easier send me an email and I'll explain it to you.
