Yes, I Can Fix Your Computer

This blogger vents his frustration about being a computer engineer who keeps getting asked to fix peoples computers. He's frustrated because everyone assumes that because he went to school for some aspect of computers he knows how to fix them. He actually went to school to learn how to program them. I sympathize with him in all of what he's going through; I get asked all the time why a computer might be doing something wrong, or not working at all, but that's what I do so it doesn't bother me as much. What does bother me is when someone asks me the same question for the same problem repeatedly after I've explained it very clearly already. If I show someone something I have them do it themselves while I watch so that they get the feel for it and the experience, what I won't do is do it for you.

China sucessfully tests new thermonuclear fusion reactor

This is pretty cool; I remember going to MIT to visit their fusion reactor. At the time they were only able to sustain a reaction for fractions of a second to a few seconds, but it was still cool and the radiation it generated was used for cancer research. The MIT reactor used a magnet coil, not sure what this Chinese model uses for containment, but cool stuff.

Missed

She said her son Bob recently took a screwdriver out of the drawer and said he was going to fix the family's motorbike.
"Off he goes, very carefully carrying it like it was a lit candle," she said. "Goes up to the motorbike and starts poking at it. I said, 'what are you doing to the motorbike?' He said, 'I'm fixing the motorbike so daddy can drive it from heaven."'

Why did this take so long?!

This is related to a previous post I made last week. Make sure if you're flying in the next couple of days you maybe print this out so that if they make an announcement about ditching drinks before boarding you can make a stink and show them this article: CNN.com - U.S. to relax ban on liquids on airliners - Sep 25, 2006

I want one, I want one

Too bad there aren't any plans right now for overseas orders, I'd snatch one up right away if I had the $$!!

It's going on sale this month in Japan, and Tokyo-based Kyosho Corp., more known for radio-controlled models, has no plans so far to take overseas orders.
REVIEW: No servant, Japan's build-a-robot delivers joy of creation
The $1,260 machine, which can walk, wave its arms and do other simple moves, comes in a kit that requires assembly _ a sprawling, mind-boggling concoction of matchbox-size motors, plastic Lego-like parts, twisted wiring, 200 tiny screws and a 100-page manual.

White and Nerdy - Great Weird Al Parody

This is one of the funniest videos I've seen in a long time. I linked to someone else that has the video since I've got so many on the front page now; hopefully it will make the page load a little faster as the videos move off the front page.

I just bought this from that guy in the newstand, what do you mean I can't bring it on the plane!?

This just about sums up all my pent up frustration at the TSA and government agencies telling us that they're making us safer by not letting us bring a bottle of soda or a cup of coffee that we bought at the newstand next to our plane's gate. I mean that has got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.

No, Vista's UI is Not Better Than This!!!

Chris Pirillo points us to a video on YouTube of a demo of the XGL/Compis video rendering software that is creating a lot of buzz in the Linux world. It's some amazing eye-candy that creates a 3D desktop, transparency on open windows, and loads of other f-ing cool effects. When I get my linux machine up and running permanently this will be one of the first things I install!

How Much Less Are You Making?

Kinda depressing seeing all those negative percents.

here's a handy map showing how far median incomes have dropped over the past six years. And it's good news for most of you: Compared to Michigan and North Carolina you're not doing so badly after all.

A Moment of Silence Please...

Today is a sad day; Steve Irwin "Crocodile Hunter" is being mourned after being killed by a stingray over the weekend. While filming underwater footage for a children's program he was hit in the chest by a stingray's barb which punctured his heart.

Penalizing Our Troops... Not Good!

Another story about our troops being treated poorly here at home: <link>

When she returned from New Orleans more than two weeks later, a couple of instructors took an unsympathetic view of her departure, she said, even though she went as a member of the Colorado Air National Guard. Her grade in communications dropped from an A to a B, due to a combination of poor attendance and difficulty making up a test.

Other deployed students, she said, were not allowed to make up science labs, given failing grades and forced to drop classes.

In extreme cases, the bad grades or uncompleted classes meant repayment of financial aid and the loss of GI Bill assistance.

What's wrong with people?! These people have vounteered to help those in need and the thanks they get when they return to their homes is a "sorry, you missed class so you get an F?" That's just bogus! I don't care if you agree with what's going on or not, I've said from the begining: "you can support the people fighting without supporting what they're fighting or why."
